The Cinematography Bookshelf: 25 Books & Magazines For The Aspiring Cinematographer
Welcome to the first installment of a new series on my blog, Essential Resources for Aspiring Cinematographers. In this series, I’ll be sharing my curated lists of tools, books, podcasts, and more to help new cinematographers expand their knowledge and elevate their skills.
As a cinematographer, I’m frequently asked for recommendations on resources that can help aspiring cinematographers deepen their understanding of the craft and the film industry as a whole. To make things easier, I’ve put together a curated list of insightful books and magazines that will offer a wealth of knowledge for cinematographers at any stage of their career. I am a huge proponent of spending your free time learning and developing your skills and understanding of the craft, especially during periods when work is slow.
I believe that, along with other educational media sources like podcasts and videos, books remain an essential resource for learning about cinematography. Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your skills, the following list covers everything from fundamental techniques to in-depth insights from conversations with seasoned professionals.
In this first post, I’ve compiled a selection of 25 books and magazines for cinematographers that cover everything from film theory and lighting techniques to interviews with some of the industry’s top cinematographers. My goal with sharing these resources is to provide a comprehensive foundation for both new cinematographers and experienced industry veterans looking to refine their skills and deepen their understanding of the art and craft of filmmaking, and cinematography in particular.
